What Is Booktok?
TikTok has taken the world by storm in recent years and they have various groups that will end up on your “For You Page” depending on what content you search for and what content you engage with. Booktok is one sub group on TikTok which is dedicated to everything book related and you can bet if you’re a bookish person, you’ll end up on Booktok.
A booktok account is made by people who love books, they upload everything book related and share their best books, worst books and any content related to books that they love. They might also post deals on books or where to find cheap books or books for free which, let’s face it, we all want free books.
If you’re thinking about making a booktok account, my advice would be to take a look at similar booktok accounts that post about books your love and get inspiration. Don’t straight up copy them but find what you like and make similar content.

The first thing you’ll want to do is make a TikTok account, pick a username that reflects what you love when it comes to book or that shows your personality. My Booktok is Literarylouis and you’re more than welcome to give me a follow and get some inspiration from the content I post.
You want to make sure you pick a great picture and start thinking of great booktok content that you want to post. You can post content of books and you can either be in the videos or not, that is your choice. However, people who post with themselves in the videos are more likely to get likes and follows.
Be patient as well, it won’t happen overnight and think of it more as a hobby so you don’t stress yourself out about engagement. I know social media is all about the followers but that will come in time. Take a look at my step by step guide on how to build the perfect booktok below.
- Create a TikTok account. If you don’t already have a TikTok account, you’ll need to create one. You can do this by downloading the TikTok app and following the on-screen instructions.
- Choose a username and profile picture. Your username and profile picture should be something that reflects your love of books. You could use your favourite book title, author, or genre.
- Add a bio. Your bio is a great place to tell people a little bit about yourself and your book interests. You can also include links to your other social media accounts or your blog.
- Start posting videos. Once you’ve set up your account, you can start posting videos about books. You can talk about books you’re reading, books you’ve read, or books you’re planning to read. You can also share book reviews, book recommendations, or book hauls.
- Use relevant hashtags. Hashtags are a great way to get your videos seen by more people. When you post a video, be sure to include relevant hashtags in the caption. Some popular BookTok hashtags include #booktok, #bookish, #bookrecommendations, and #bookhaul.
- Interact with other BookTok users. One of the best ways to grow your BookTok account is to interact with other BookTok users. You can do this by liking and commenting on their videos, and by following them. You can also join BookTok groups and communities.
- Be patient. It takes time to build a successful BookTok account. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t see results immediately. Just keep posting great content and interacting with other users, and you’ll eventually start to see your account grow.
