James Hotel Rotterdam Review
On our recent trip to Rotterdam we stayed in the James hotel. It was affordable and looked really nice and that’s why we’re giving you the run down on what we really thought. To us the hotel was a mixed bag and we’d love to know what you thought about the place.
James Boutique Hotel Rotterdam
The James Hotel in Rotterdam stands out as a chic and affordable boutique hotel in the heart of the city. With a design that seamlessly blends modern luxury and comfort, this hotel caters to travelers seeking an urban oasis without the high-end price tag. Featuring thoughtfully designed interiors, a 24/7 food market, and stylish amenities, The James offers a refreshing alternative to standard chain hotels. It’s the perfect choice for both leisure and business travellers wanting to stay close to Rotterdam’s top attractions, shopping streets, and culinary hotspots.
Plus if you’re just wanting something naughty then there’s a McDonalds right around the corner. You can even use the plates and cutlery that are in the self service snack area which we took full advantage of, the plates and cutlery, not the snacks!
One thing we didn’t like about the James Hotel in Rotterdam was the unexpected €100 security deposit you have to put down when you check-in. This money is effectively taken off of your card so you’re unable to use it and it kind of spoils the whole experience if you didn’t know about it beforehand.
James Hotel Rotterdam Check-In
Check-in at The James Hotel is from 3:00 PM. The process is smooth, friendly, and efficient. Whether you’re arriving early or late, the reception staff are known for their warm hospitality and are happy to assist with luggage storage or local recommendations. The reception is open 24/7, so even late-night travellers will be well looked after.
The reception is manned at all times so if you’re worried you’re getting there at a random time then fear not, someone will be waiting for you. It seemed that they had a small reception staff rotation so you’re bound to see the same person more than once, especially if you have a long stay.

James Hotel Rotterdam Parking
The hotel offers secure in-house parking via a modern elevator system. With 22 parking spaces available, guests are advised to reserve in advance by contacting the hotel at info@thejames.nl. Parking is reasonably priced at €20 per night, and additional public parking options are available in the surrounding area.
Although we didn’t use the parking ourselves we took a good look and we can say that the road is rather busy so getting in and out of the car park can be a slight issue at times so keep that in mind although with the trams and everything being close by, driving isn’t a must.
The James Hotel Rotterdam Booking
Booking a stay at The James is simple and flexible. Reservations can be made via the official website thejames.nl or through trusted platforms like Booking.com, Expedia, and Hotels.com. We booked through hotels.com because it was easier for us and we found a good deal but it’s always worth looking around for the best deal if you want to save money.
The James Hotel Rotterdam Breakfast
The James takes a modern approach to dining with its 24/7 Food Market, offering fresh and delicious breakfast items, snacks, and drinks all day and night. Instead of a traditional breakfast buffet, guests can pick and choose what they need, ideal for travellers on the go or those wanting flexibility. You can pay with your credit card, debit card, or with a voucher purchased at reception.
This was one thing that let the Rotterdam James Hotel down in our eyes, there was no restaurant, no way to have a proper meal unless you ordered in and not everyone wants a quick snack for breakfast.
The James Hotel Rotterdam Check-Out Time
Check-out time is 11:00 AM, giving guests ample time to enjoy a relaxed morning. For those needing a bit more time, late check-out is available at €10 per hour, up to 1:00 PM, subject to availability. The reception can store your luggage if you plan to explore the city after check-out.
Checkout was fast and easy but make sure you ask them about the €100 security deposit you have to put down, a gentle reminder never hurts anyone when it comes to a large amount of money.

Fitness enthusiasts will appreciate the gym facilities located on the 2nd floor. The gym is open from 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM, and includes cardio machines, free weights, and strength equipment. Access is free for all hotel guests, making it easy to maintain your routine during your stay.
We didn’t use the gym but we had a peak in and it looked small but well suited for a workout.
The James Hotel Rotterdam Location
One of the hotel’s biggest draws is its unbeatable central location. Situated near Rotterdam’s best shopping streets—Lijnbaan, Meent, and Coolsingel—you’re never more than a few minutes from restaurants, museums, and nightlife. Cultural highlights like the Markthal, Cube Houses, and Witte de Withstraat are within walking distance. Whether you’re here for sightseeing, shopping, or dining, everything is right on your doorstep.
The James Hotel Rotterdam Restaurant
While The James Hotel does not feature an in-house restaurant, its Food Market offers a great variety of items including salads, sandwiches, drinks, and sweet treats. For a sit-down meal, guests can explore the numerous nearby restaurants such as Takumi Sapporo Ramen, Sugo Pizza, and De Bijenkorf café, all within a few minutes’ walk.
There’s also a McDonalds a one minute walk away if you fancy something from there, just make sure you have sweet and sour with it.
The James Hotel Rotterdam Reviews
Reviews for The James Hotel are overwhelmingly positive. Guests frequently praise the modern design, cleanliness, and friendly staff. Many highlight the spacious rooms, convenient location, and the 24/7 Food Market as standout features. On platforms like TripAdvisor, Google, and Booking.com, The James consistently earns high ratings for its value, style, and service.
We would happily give them a four star tops. The fact they have no restaurant and the fact that the self snack area was a little small was a let down. We didn’t use the gym although it looked good and the fact that no key card was needed to get to the room was a little iffy although the reception was manned 24/7.
